Location: Seattle, WA (On-site required)
Company: Arzeda – The Protein Design Company™

About Arzeda
Arzeda is a world-leader in enzyme design and synthetic biology. Leveraging our core expertise in structure-based computational protein design, machine learning and high-throughput testing, we design novel enzymes and bio-catalytic processes for sustainable food ingredients and materials. A deep tech, mission-driven company, we are passionate about our mission to design novel proteins and products that enhance our lives and protect our planet.

Overview:
Arzeda’s Strain Engineering team is seeking a highly motivated intern to join our Strain Engineering team this summer. This role will focus on the design, construction, and characterization of genetic parts libraries in our core microbial chasses to enable enhanced and tunable protein production in microbial hosts.

The intern will contribute directly to the development of standardized genetic components (e.g., promoters, RBS/UTRs, terminators, etc.) that support scalable and predictable recombinant protein expression. This is an excellent opportunity for a student interested in synthetic biology, microbial engineering, and applied molecular biology to gain hands-on experience in strain engineering workflows.

Please note that this position requires authorization to work in the U.S. without current or future visa sponsorship.

Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Synthetic Biology, Bioengineering, Microbiology, or a related field.
    • Preference for graduate level students, though undergraduates with highly relevant experience will be considered.
  • Hands-on laboratory experience in common molecular biology methods like gel electrophoresis (DNA and proteins), PCR, microbial culturing (shake flasks, deep well plates), microbial plating, sterile techniques, etc.
  • Experience with genetic cloning and plasmid construction of industrial yeasts and/or prokaryotes, particularly in the application of protein production.
  • Strong attention to detail and data organization
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating within a team

Duration and Structure
  • Duration: 3 months minimum, preference for 6 months, to start in early Summer
  • Location: Seattle, WA (onsite)
  • Reports to: Senior Scientist on the Strain Engineering team
  • Compensation: $25-35/hr dependent upon experience level.
  • Work hours: Standard 40 hour work week. No overtime is expected, and would require prior approval from the manager.
  • Responsibilities: In addition to day-to-day research and other responsibilities, the intern will be required to prepare a final report and presentation summarizing the results of their work.
